QISD Student Survey

Please judge your level of achievement in each of the following competencies. Check the number which best reflects your current level of skill attainment. Marking level 4 shows you can also do levels 2 and 3 (Be honest, but be kind). This tool is designed to help understand your current level of skills with computer technologies.

1. Basic Computer Use

Level 1 - I do not use a computer.
Level 2 - I use the computer to run a few specific, pre-loaded programs.
Level 3 - I run two programs simultaneously, and have a few windows open simultaneously.
Level 4 - I trouble-shoot successfully when basic problems with my computer or printer occur. I learn new programs on my own.

2. File Management

Level 1 - I do not save any documents I create using the computer.
Level 2 - I select, open and save documents on different drives.
Level 3 - I create my own folders to keep files organized and understand the importance of a back-up system
Level 4 - I move files between folders and drives, and I maintain my network storage size within acceptable limits.

3. Word Processing

Level 1 - I do not use a word processing program.
Level 2 - I occasionally use a word processing program for basic writing tasks.
Level 3 - I use a word processor tools (font style, spell check, grammar check) to edit my work.
Level 4 - I use word processor to edit, compare, or improve my pervious drafts and publish the final document.

4. Spreadsheet Use

Level 1 - I do not use a spreadsheet.
Level 2 - I enter data in a spreadsheet.
Level 3 - I choose and create charts and graphs to make sense of spreadsheet information.
Level 4 - I explain my information using well-labeled and effective charts and graphs.

5. Library Database Use

Level 1 - I do not use Library Search database.
Level 2 - I search for books and videotapes using Title, Author, Subject, and Keyword fields.
Level 3 - I use the information in the Library Search database to locate and select books for research or reading.
Level 4 - I use hyperlinks in the Library Search database to find related topics or titles in the library.

6. Graphics Use

Level 1 - I do not use graphics.
Level 2 - I open, create, and place simple pictures into documents using drawing programs, paint or clipart.
Level 3 - I edit and create graphics, placing them in documents in order to help clarify or amplify my message, and cite my sources.
Level 4 - I select and modify graphics using digital photos, scanned drawings, in order to make my point or illustrate what I have learned.

7. Internet Use

Level 1 - I do not use the Internet.
Level 2 - I visit school- selected web sites and use navigation buttons to move between pages.
Level 3 - I use various search engines to efficiently locate information on my research questions.
Level 4 - I evaluate and select Internet information that is reliable, accurate and appropriate to my research questions.

8. Telecommunications Use (E-Mail)

Level 1 - I do not use e-mail.
Level 2 - I have an e-mail account but rarely use it.
Level 3 - I send messages using e-mail - mostly to teachers, friends, and family. I check my e-mail account on a regular basis and maintain my mail folders in an organized manner.
Level 4 - I use e-mail to request and send information for research and assignments.

9. Ethical Use Understanding

Level 1 - I am not aware of any ethical issues surrounding computer use.
Level 2 - I know that some copyright restrictions apply to computer software.
Level 3 - I understand district rules concerning student and adult use of
Level 4 - I model ethical use of all technology devices, software, network, Internet use.

10. Information-Searching

Level 1 - I am unlikely to seek information when it is in electronic formats.
Level 2 - I conduct simple searches using selected web sites.
Level 3 - I select, gather and use information from multiple electronic sources to answer questions.
Level 4 - I analyze, evaluate, and communicate the information I’ve gathered, and credit sources I’ve used.I analyze, evaluate, and communicate the information I’ve gathered, and credit sources I’ve used.

11. Presentation Skills

Level 1 - I do not use computer presentation programs.
Level 2 - I use templates or wizards to create presentation documents (Power Point).
Level 3 - I create a blank presentation using text, pictures and sound to create an original presentation.
Level 4 - I create well organized presentations that can be used to share information or persuade an audience.

12. Desktop Publishing

Level 1 - I do not use a publishing program.
Level 2 - I use templates and wizards to produce a published document.
Level 3 - I produce original publications from a blank page combining design elements such as columns, tables, word art, and clipart.
Level 4 - I design original publications that communicate to others what I have learned.

13.Web Page Development

Level 1 - I have never created a web page.
Level 2 - I have created a simple web page.
Level 3 - I have created a webpage with links, pictures, and text.
Level 4 - I have created a webpage with links, pictures, text, with a uniform layout, easy to navigate, and follows classroom guidelines.
